When we find that we’re in error—whether we’ve done something awful intentionally or accidentally hurt someone we love—the temptation to fix things on our own is strong. I want to make things better. I want to change myself. Lewka’s life captures what I find true about myself: When I try to fix things on my own, I usually end up making matters worse. Instead, we need to fall on God’s mercy. Switchfoot is my favorite band. As I was contemplating the themes for The Stewards’ Apprentice, I happened to be listening to their new song, “The Strength to Let Go.” This song is deeply beautiful and honest, and it is perfect for The Steward’s Apprentice. So I’ve painted these pictures as inspiration as I rewrite the novel. The background fits the story’s setting, and the quotes fit the themes.
