The “What If?” Fantasy Tag

Kyle Robert Shultz, one of my fellow indie and, more specifically, Phoenix Fiction authors tagged me in a fun game.  It looked like fun, and I got to thinking that I haven’t posted in a while, so here we go :)  The original post can be found here.

Thanks for the tag, Kyle! For the rest of you, if you haven’t read his stories yet, you’re missing out big time.  They’re among my favorites that I read last year (and he’s a writing machine, so he has more coming out faster than you can probably read).  He writes fairy tales set in the world of fairy tales after “The End,” following a detective who is determined to disprove magic.  They’re hilarious, entertaining, hopeful, and full of fantastic characters.  Find out more about them on his website.

The Questions

1. Your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. The cast of the most recent fantasy book you read comes to your assistance… who are they? Will they be helpful?

The cast of Lois Lowry’s Gathering Blue doesn’t seem like they’d be the MOST helpful in this situation.  Matt is resourceful, though I doubt his technological expertise.  Thomas might be able to carve something helpful.  Kira could embroider my car upholstery?  And little Jo would at least make waiting for AAA less boring with her lovely singing.

2. You go to bed one evening and wake up in the lair of the villain of the last fairy tale you read, where are you and how do you plan to get out?

I’d be in the lair of the Fairy Godmother from The Stroke of Eleven, by the aforementioned Kyle Robert Shultz.  I’m definitely getting out by helping Nick, Cordelia, and the gang with whatever hare-brained (pun intended) scheme they get up to.  That seems like my surest bet for getting out.

3. You are transported into a fantasy realm and given a mythical creature as a companion and best friend… which mythical creature do you get?

I definitely want my own axex, like the ones Rai and co. befriend in Child of the Kaites.  They’re majestic and soft and friendly and can FLY, and at certain points in the history of their world they can also talk.  They’re my favorites.

If we’re sticking with creatures from books I did not write myself, then Mr. Tumnus from The Chronicles of Narnia would be an amazing companion and friend.

4. In a strange series of coincidences, you end up needing to take the place of your favorite fantasy hero or heroine. Who are you? 

Eowyn’s my favorite fantasy heroine, so I would end up taking her place.  I love her courage and boldness despite all she’s suffered and all the lies that have told her she’s not enough. (I wouldn’t choose to be her, though.  I don’t envy her her life.  If I had a choice, I’d be Hermione.  She’s got a heart as big as her mind, she is passionate for helping others, and she gets to study at Hogwarts.)

5. To go along with question #4, now that you are that character, is there anything you would do differently than that character, now that you are running the show?

I don’t know if I’d have Eowyn’s courage to leave Rohan with the riders.  I hope I would have done more to separate King Theoden from Wormtongue, though.  I definitely would have also had a massive crush on Aragorn, so that’s no different.

6. If you were yourself in a fantasy novel, what role do you think you would play in the story?

I would probably be the local storyteller, or the teacher/tutor/mentor who inspired the hero on their journey and sent them off well-stocked with plenty of food and crocheted things.

7. One morning, as you are going about your daily business, you pick up an everyday item and a voice booms in your head with prophetic words about your future. What object is it, and what is your prophecy?

The object is a water bottle, too long abandoned in the morning in favor of tea.  It speaks this prophecy:

Long did I fill your cells
With water, kept you hydrated well.
Since you chose the wicked tea,
You’ll now suffer headaches three.
Pay your penance, hydrate well,
And once again your stories tell.

8. You are transported into a magical realm and turned into a mythical beast… what beast/fantasy creature do you want to be?

I would want to be an Ent.  I love trees and forests.  I like taking a long time to say things.  I like the slow pace of life, and I hobbits.  The life of an Ent would be lovely.

9. If you could read your way into any fantasy realm, but the catch is that you can never leave, would you? Which realm would you choose?

There is only one fantasy world in which I would want to spend the rest of my life, and that is Narnia.  Specifically, Narnia under the reigns of the Pevensies or Caspian X.

10.  As you are going about your normal day, you discover that you have a magical power. What is it?

My magical power would be the ability to transfer stories from my head instantly to paper.  I have SO MANY stories in my mind, and the process of writing can be frustratingly long and slow.  Otherwise, I’d have the ability to refill anything.  Empty cup?  Refill it.  Empty bank account?  Refill it.  Empty sleep reserve?  Refill it.
